		<abstract>O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar a precisão de classificação de uso do solo urbano através de diferentes opções de aquisição de assinatura, disponíveis no IMAGE-100, e do classificador de amostra baseado na distância Bhattacharyya ("distância B"). Procurou-se também verificar a separabilidade estatística existente entre as classes de uso do solo levantadas para todas as combinações de um até quatro canais espectrais do LANDSAT-1. A cidade de São José dos Campos localizada na região fisiográfica do médio Vale do Paraíba (Estado de São Paulo), foi utilizada como área teste. Foram analisadas as seguintes classes de uso do solo urbano: residencial uni-familiar, residencial multi-familiar, comercial, industrial, institucional, agrícola e desocupada. A média dos erros de omissão obtidos para as sete classes nas opções de classificação unicélula, multi-célula, aquisição interativa de assinaturas e classificador de amostras "distância B" foram 23%, 71%, 32% e 32% respectivamente. A média dos erros de inclusão para cada opção de classificação uni-célula, multi-célula, aquisição interativa de assinatura e classificador de amostras "distância B" foram 28%, 8%, 27% e 6% respectivamente. ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to compare the classification accuracy of various options of signature acquisition of IMAGE-100 and sample classifier based on Bhattacharyya distance (B distance) for land use classes using multispectral scanner data of LANDSAT-1 satellite. Another objective of the study was to determine the statistical separability of seven land use classes in all the possible combinations of one to four spectral channels, out of four available channels of LANDSAT-I. São José dos Campos was used as test site and is situated in the physiographic Central Valley of the Paraíba River region in State of São Paulo. With the help of ground observations and aerial photography, a map of São José dos Campos showing the following seven classes was obtained: single family residential areas, multi-family residential areas, commercial areas, industrial areas, institutional areas, agricultural areas and unoccupied areas. Each of these classes was divided into two independent sets: training areas and test areas. Errors of omission and commission were calculated for each classification option. The average of errors of omission and commission over the seven land use classes for the options single cell, multicell, interactive signature acquisition and sample classifier were found to be: single-cell (23%/28%) multi-cell (71%/8%) interactive signature acquisition (32%/27%) and sample classifier (32%/6%). In the subsets of one to three spectral channels, channel 4, channels 4 & 7, channels 4, 5 & 7 were found to be the best ones for getting good overall statistical separability of land use classes.</abstract>
